in the middle of summer vacation
- it turns a daunting task into an easy exercise
- it begins with stories you already know and builds on skills you already have
- something else that's good to know: your stories are unique, and they make your application - and you - unforgettable
- there's no homework
- writing a story you already know is a lot easier than writing a list of personal qualities
- you can use this workshop as a warm-up for your essays; you can use it to finish your essays
- it starts late in the afternoon and finishes before evening begins
- other people will be there
- pizza is involved
- you get a follow-up session any time in 2011
Here's an example:
A student who wanted to study engineering wrote about his 5th grade recess. He described how he and his buddies built a series of dams across a small stream one spring. They organized the younger kids to help gather sticks and small stones, and they re-routed the water around corners and through several pools - and then back to its original course. When recess ended, they left reluctantly, knowing the water would undo their work, and already planning how they would change it at lunch time.
Basically, this student said "I like recess." He could have also said, "I like to experiment, I learn by doing, and I'm a team player" - and all of this would be true. But by telling a story, he created images that made him unique and unforgettable. It was easy for his readers to "see" and remember him.
You have stories, too.
Learn how to turn them into really good essays.
